Preview: Ebbw Vale v Aberavon

This Saturday, Aberavon will now play Ebbw Vale at Merthyr RFC in Round 3 of the Super Rygbi Cymru Cup, with kick-off at 1:30 p.m.

For The Steelmen, this will be their first involvement in the competition after receiving a bye in Round 1 and seeing last weekend’s fixture against Swansea at Dunvant postponed. In league action, Ebbw Vale have put together an impressive campaign so far, winning 12 of their 14 Super Rygbi Cymru matches to sit clear at the top of the table, twenty points ahead of nearest challengers Llandovery.

The Wizards head into the tie with a positive historical record against Saturday’s opponents in the Welsh Cup. The sides have met four times in the competition, with Aberavon winning three of those encounters. Their first Cup meeting came in the 1983–84 Schweppes Cup quarter-final, when Aberavon claimed a 16–7 victory at Eugene Cross Park. The Steelmen responded in the 1996–97 Swalec Cup with a convincing 32–8 win at the Talbot Athletic Ground, but the next two clashes went the way of The Wizards – a 33–31 away win in 2005–06, followed by a 32–22 quarter-final success at home in 2007–08.
