Aberavon Rugby Club’s Brad Roderick Takes on January Running Challenge to Support Singleton Hospital NICU

Aberavon Rugby Club is proud to announce that club player Brad Roderick is undertaking an inspiring personal challenge throughout January to raise funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Singleton Hospital, in support of Swansea Bay Health Charity.

Brad has committed to running every day in January, completing a distance in kilometres that matches the date — meaning 1km on January 1st, 2km on January 2nd, and so on — with all funds raised going directly to support the vital work of the Singleton NICU. The initiative has already surpassed its initial fundraising target, with over £1,100 raised to date thanks to generous support from the community.

Brad’s motivation for this charity effort comes from a deeply personal connection to one of his teammates and coaches at Aberavon. He reached out to club Defence coach Nick White and his family, whose daughter Esme spent many months under the exceptional care of the NICU team after being born extremely prematurely. Brad explains that he wanted to honour that extraordinary journey — and the resilience shown by the White family — by giving back to the unit that played a crucial role in Esme’s care.

Esme’s story is one of remarkable courage and determination. Born at just 23 weeks and weighing only 390 grams, she faced numerous critical health challenges from the very beginning. With compassionate care from the NICU staff and unwavering support from her family, she defied expectations and continued to grow stronger. Brad is proud to support the unit that gave Esme — and many other families — invaluable care when they needed it most.

Aberavon Rugby Club wholeheartedly supports Brad’s fundraising efforts and commends him for using his personal challenge to make a meaningful difference for local healthcare services and families across Swansea Bay.
