Match Report: Aberavon 19 – 28 Carmarthen Quins
On a bright and dry Saturday afternoon at the Talbot Athletic Ground, Aberavon hosted Carmarthen Quins in the eighth round of the Super Rygbi Cymru competition.
The game began with early excitement as Aberavon wing Cori Lewis-Jenkins nearly opened the scoring in the sixth minute. He picked up a loose ball deep in his own half and raced towards the Carmarthen line, only to be denied by a superb try-saving tackle just short of the line.
Carmarthen capitalised on their early dominance in the set-piece, particularly the scrum, and opened the scoring in the 12th minute. After taking the ball against the head in an Aberavon scrum inside the 22, the Quins worked through several phases before full back Steff Evans crossed the line. Outside half Elis Price added the conversion to make it 7–0.
Just four minutes later, the visitors extended their lead. From a lineout inside Aberavon’s 22, wing Thomas Williams powered over for Carmarthen’s second try, again converted by Price, putting the Quins 14–0 ahead.
Aberavon struggled to find rhythm in the first half, particularly in the lineout, and were nearly punished again in the 25th minute, but full back Scott Delnevo produced a crucial tackle to prevent another Carmarthen score.
The Wizards finally got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute. A lineout five metres from the Quins’ line was followed by a powerful carry from number 8 Ashton Evans. Wing Frankie Jones finished the move with a try, and outside half Charlie Thomas converted via the upright to bring the score to 14–7.
However, Carmarthen responded swiftly. After sustained pressure on the Aberavon try line, they crossed again under the posts in the 35th minute. Price maintained his perfect kicking record to make it 21–7 at the break.
The second half began with Carmarthen continuing their dominance. In the 45th minute, hooker Isaac Young scored from a driven lineout five metres out, securing the bonus point try. Price’s conversion stretched the lead to 28–7.
Aberavon, however, began to turn the tide. Their lineout improved and they started to find space out wide. In the 49th minute, replacement outside half Tomi Booth finished a well-worked move from a lineout near the Quins’ line and converted his own try to reduce the deficit to 28–14.
The Wizards continued to press and were rewarded again in the 66th minute when replacement scrum half Caelan Carson-Jones finished off a flowing attacking move to bring the score to 28–19. Despite late pressure, Aberavon couldn’t close the gap further, and the game ended after four minutes of added time.
While Carmarthen Quins took the win, Aberavon showed resilience and improvement in the second half, “winning” it 12–7. The match also marked a significant milestone for Aberavon prop Geraint James, who made his 150th appearance for the club.
