Match Report: Aberavon 17 – 47 Llandovery
Aberavon closed out their Super Rygbi Cymru regular-season campaign at the Talbot Athletic Ground with a tough afternoon against Llandovery.
The home crowd had barely settled before Aberavon struck first. After only three minutes, Scott Whitlock scoring the opening try, giving The Wizards an early 5–0 advantage. The response from Llandovery, however, was swift. The Drovers hit back in the sixth minute when Tomi Lewis crossed for his first try of the day, converted by Ioan Hughes to make it 5–7. Just two minutes later, Lewis struck again, with Hughes adding the extras to put Llandovery ahead 5–14.
In the 26th minute, Frankie Jones scored for Aberavon, and Tomi Booth’s conversion narrowed the gap to 12–14. But The Drovers reasserted control on 31 minutes when Aaron Warren added their third try, once again improved by Hughes, restoring a nine-point cushion at 12–21. Back came The Wizards before the interval, Jones grabbing his second try on 36 minutes to make it 17–21 and keep the contest tight. Crucially for Llandovery, though, they struck again in stoppage time when Harry Thomas crossed to send The Drovers into the break leading 17–26.
The second half began with Aberavon needing the next score, but it was Llandovery who extended their grip on the match. In the 53rd minute, Kian Abraham powered over, Hughes maintaining his perfect kicking record to push the lead to 17–33. The Wizards’ task grew tougher still when Jamie Goldsworthy was shown a yellow card on 65 minutes, leaving the hosts down to fourteen men. The Drovers capitalised almost immediately, Cameron Lewis scoring a minute later with Hughes converting yet again for a 17–40 advantage.
Goldsworthy returned to the field on 77 minutes, but by then the visitors were firmly in control. In the final act of the match, in injury time, Jac Davies added Llandovery’s seventh try, converted this time by Steffan Jac Jones, sealing a 17–47 final scoreline.
