Match Report: RGC 1404 39 – 12 Aberavon

Aberavon travelled to Eirias Stadium knowing that a strong start would be key, and The Wizards opened brightly, enjoying both territory and possession in the early exchanges. An early attacking lineout took them close to the line, but RGC 1404 earned a relieving penalty to clear their lines and prevent the opening score.

The next time The Gogs had ball in hand, they threatened, but Aberavon scrambled well to force play into touch and keep the contest finely balanced. Both sides were probing for weaknesses, and as the opening quarter unfolded, Aberavon began to earn a series of penalties at the breakdown, giving the visitors useful field position to build their attack.

It was Aberavon who struck first. The Wizards worked the ball left, moving it through the hands for outside half Keillen Cullen to finish. The lead, however, was short-lived, as RGC 1404 hit back immediately with a burst of pace and a straight line from wing Sam Jones, with outside half Billy McBryde converting.

The Wizards responded in perfect fashion. From the restart, they regained momentum, and full back Scott Delnevo crossed to restore their advantage, with Cullen adding the extras for a 12–7 lead. But again the contest shifted quickly, as The Gogs returned to the front foot and won a penalty which McBryde duly slotted.

As the half progressed, Aberavon continued to compete strongly, but RGC 1404’s accuracy with the boot nudged them ahead through another McBryde penalty following a break by RGC.

The second half began with a moment The Wizards would have preferred to avoid. Wing Sam Jones was released down the line for his second score, with McBryde converting to extend the home advantage. Aberavon responded with determination, enjoying a sustained spell of possession and making promising inroads from attacking lineouts. But The Gogs’ defence held firm.

The Wizards continued to chase the game, but RGC 1404 kept the scoreboard moving when they tapped quickly and second row Harper Chamberlain powered over, McBryde again converting. Aberavon pushed forward once more and earned a visit to the home 22, but The Gogs’ defensive effort out wide proved difficult to break down.

The Gogs added their bonus-point try when replacement Louis Williams finished another well-worked move close to the line, and in the closing stages they moved the ball well for wing Delwyn Jones to claim another score. McBryde’s conversion brought the match to its conclusion.
