Our Story

Founded in 1876

Aberavon Rugby Club was founded in 1876, making it one of the oldest and most respected rugby clubs in Wales.

Originally known as Afan Football Club, the organisation evolved through several identities before becoming Aberavon Rugby Football Club. Rugby arrived in the area at a time of significant change. Following the death of Theodore Talbot, a prominent figure in local sport, the people of Port Talbot embraced a new game that was rapidly spreading across South Wales – rugby union.

The club quickly became a focal point for the local community, representing the pride, character and resilience of the town both on and off the field.

The Home of the Wizards

By the early years of the twentieth century, Aberavon had established its home at what was then known as the Central Athletic Ground.

A defining moment came in 1913 when Miss Emily Charlotte Talbot granted the club exclusive use of the ground through a 39-year lease at a nominal rent. In recognition of the Talbot family’s support, the venue became known as the Talbot Athletic Ground – or simply “TAG” – a name that remains synonymous with Aberavon Rugby Club to this day.

Through Adversity

Like many clubs across Britain, Aberavon was shaped by the impact of two World Wars.

The Talbot Athletic Ground played its part in the national effort, while players and supporters answered the call to serve. Many returned carrying the scars of conflict, including Charlie “Warhorse” Jones and Jim Evans, who both lost an arm during the First World War. Remarkably, Evans continued to play rugby for the club, becoming a symbol of the determination and spirit that continues to define Aberavon.

When rugby resumed after the Second World War, Aberavon once again became a source of pride and unity for the local community.

The Rise of the Wizards

During the twentieth century, Aberavon established itself as one of the leading clubs in Welsh rugby.

The club became affectionately known as “The Wizards”, a nickname earned through the exciting and successful teams that thrilled supporters throughout the decades. Generations of talented players wore the famous blood and black jersey, while the club regularly competed amongst the strongest sides in Wales.

From memorable cup runs and league campaigns to producing players who represented Wales, the British & Irish Lions and the Barbarians, Aberavon’s influence extended far beyond Port Talbot.

Modern Era

The professional era brought new challenges and opportunities.

Aberavon continued to adapt and compete, producing outstanding players such as Justin Tipuric and Ashley Beck while maintaining its reputation as one of Welsh rugby’s most respected development environments.

The club enjoyed notable successes in the Welsh Premiership and remained a cornerstone of rugby within the region, balancing ambition on the field with a strong commitment to its community.

150 Years of Aberavon

Today, Aberavon Rugby Club stands proudly at the heart of Port Talbot as it celebrates its 150th anniversary season.

Built on generations of players, volunteers, supporters and sponsors, the club continues to honour its rich heritage while looking firmly towards the future.

From the first team that took the field in 1876 to the players representing the Wizards today, the story of Aberavon Rugby Club has always been about more than rugby.

It is a story of community, pride, resilience and belonging.

And the next chapter is still being written.
