Aberavon Rugby Club is proud to highlight the continued development of Gwilym Evans, whose progression through Super Rygbi Cymru underlines the vital role the competition plays in preparing players for the professional game.

Gwilym is an Aberavon Rugby player, aged 22 and plays open side flanker, signed in the first season of Super Rygbi Cymru in 2024/25 straight out of BUCS Super Rugby with Cardiff University.
The structure of Super Rygbi Cymru allows players to develop with their club in their pursuit to become a professional rugby player with added aspirations to play for Wales — a key part of the modern Welsh rugby pathway.
Reflecting on his experience with Aberavon, Gwilym said:
“Playing for Aberavon in Super Rygbi Cymru has been massive for me. The competition is tough, the standards are high, and every week you’re challenged both physically and mentally. It’s exactly what you need if you want to be ready for professional rugby.”

Super Rygbi Cymru was created to bridge the gap between community and professional rugby, and Gwilym’s development is a clear example of that purpose in action. Regular exposure to intense, meaningful fixtures has helped him continue to grow his game while remaining a key part of the Aberavon setup.
Aberavon head coach, Jason Hyatt, added:
“Gwilym is a great example of how Super Rygbi Cymru supports player development. He’s still an Aberavon player, but the competition allows him to challenge himself, perform consistently, and be ready when professional opportunities come. That’s exactly what the league is designed to do.”
That readiness has already been rewarded. Gwilym recently made his first start for the Ospreys in the EPCR Challenge Cup against US Montauban, before also representing the region in the United Rugby Championship. These appearances reflect the standards and preparation provided through Super Rygbi Cymru and the environment at Aberavon.
Aberavon Attack Coach Chris Davies highlighted why the club moved quickly to secure Gwilym’s signature:
“For me, and I am biased of course, but having worked with Gwilym for three-seasons at BUCS level, I could not believe there was not offer on the table for him. Aberavon’s gain for sure. Gwils’ game understand, rugby IQ and problem solving is at a super high standard. He just needs a platform, he will do the rest. The encouraging fact is, he is just getting started … sit back”
Speaking openly about joining the club, Gwilym added:
“At the time no other club came in for me, but I was more than happy to sign for Aberavon. I knew it would give me a platform to play, develop, and really test myself. It’s a club with strong standards and a great rugby environment.”
Gwilym Evans’ journey stands as a strong example of what Super Rygbi Cymru can offer — a competitive, demanding environment that develops players and supports their transition to professional rugby.

Everyone at Aberavon Rugby Club congratulates Gwilym on his achievements so far and looks forward to supporting his continued progression, proudly watching one of our own represent both Aberavon and the Ospreys.
