Aberavon head east for their first away fixture of the Super Rygbi Cymru season as the Wizards take on Newport at Newport Stadium on Friday evening.

After opening the club’s 150th anniversary season with an impressive victory over Bridgend, Aberavon suffered their first defeat of the campaign against Ebbw Vale last weekend.

Despite the final scoreline, there were plenty of positives for the Wizards to take from the contest. Aberavon caused the Steelmen problems for significant periods and went into half-time firmly in the game, but errors and a loss of control after the interval allowed Ebbw Vale to pull away.

Friday provides an immediate opportunity to respond.

Newport have made an excellent start to the new campaign and arrive at Round Three unbeaten. The Black & Ambers opened with victory over RGC before producing an impressive performance to defeat reigning champions Llandovery at Church Bank.

That makes Newport Stadium one of the toughest assignments in the competition, but it is also exactly the type of challenge Aberavon will relish.

Head Coach Chris Davies has made speed and intent central to the Wizards’ approach this season, and Aberavon will once again look to play positively with ball in hand while demanding greater accuracy and discipline without it.

The challenge will be turning promising periods into sustained pressure.

For Aberavon, the message this week has been simple: FIX IT.

Rather than allowing last weekend’s result to dictate the mood, the focus has been on identifying the areas that hurt the Wizards against Ebbw Vale and putting them right. Better decisions, greater accuracy and a collective responsibility to stay connected when momentum begins to shift will all be important against a dangerous Newport side.

There is also plenty of history between two of Welsh club rugby’s great names. Aberavon and Newport have shared countless battles over the years, and another chapter will be written under the Friday night lights.

Three rounds into a long campaign, nobody inside the Aberavon camp will be drawing conclusions from the league table.

Instead, the focus remains on developing this group, establishing the way the Wizards want to play and continuing to raise the standards required to compete with the best sides in Super Rygbi Cymru.

Friday night represents another opportunity to do exactly that.
