Meet Garyn Smith

As Aberavon Rugby Club prepares to embark on its historic 150th anniversary season, the Wizards are pleased to welcome Garyn Smith to the coaching team as Attack & Backs Coach.

Joining Head Coach Chris Davies, Forwards Coach Sam Williams and the wider management group, Garyn arrives with a genuine enthusiasm for the challenge ahead and a clear vision for the type of rugby he wants to help bring to Talbot Athletic Ground.

For Garyn, the opportunity to join Aberavon was one that immediately stood out.

“Clubs like Aberavon don’t come around very often. There is a rich history, a passionate supporter base and a real sense of identity. When I spoke with Chris about the vision for the future, it was something I wanted to be part of.

“To join the club ahead of its 150th anniversary season makes it even more special. There is a responsibility that comes with representing a club that has contributed so much to Welsh rugby over the years.”

Having spent a number of years developing his coaching craft, Garyn describes himself as a coach who values clarity, confidence and decision-making above all else.

“I want players to understand the game. Rugby is constantly changing and players need to be able to solve problems under pressure. As coaches, our job is to provide a framework that allows players to make good decisions and express themselves.

“Attack isn’t just about scoring tries. It’s about creating pressure, identifying opportunities and understanding how to manipulate space. The best attacking teams are connected, adaptable and confident in what they’re trying to achieve.”

Those principles align closely with the direction Aberavon is looking to move in as preparations continue for the new campaign.

Having already begun familiarising himself with the squad, Garyn has been encouraged by what he has seen.

“There is a really good blend within the group. There are players with experience who understand what it means to represent Aberavon, and there are younger players who are hungry to make their mark.

“What has impressed me most is the willingness to learn and improve. That’s always a good starting point because talent will only take you so far. The best teams are built on commitment, attitude and a desire to get better every day.”

As supporters look ahead to the new season, Garyn hopes they will see a team that reflects the values that have long been associated with Aberavon Rugby Club.

“When people watch us play, I want them to see a team that is brave, energetic and committed to one another. We want to play with ambition, but we also want to be tough, resilient and competitive.

“Aberavon has always been a club built on hard work and pride. Those values should never change.”

With preseason now underway and excitement continuing to build around the club’s landmark anniversary year, Garyn is eager to get to work.

“I’m looking forward to building relationships with the players, learning more about the club and helping create something that supporters can be proud of.

“I’ve already felt the passion people have for Aberavon and I can’t wait to experience that on matchdays. We know what this club means to the community and we’ll be working hard every day to represent it in the right way.”

As the Wizards begin writing the next chapter in their proud history, everyone at Aberavon Rugby Club would like to welcome Garyn Smith to the Blood & Black and wish him every success in his new role.
