Aberavon RFC is delighted to announce the appointment of former Wizard Stef Andrews as Performance Coach, as the club continues to strengthen its coaching team ahead of the 2026/27 Super Rygbi Cymru season.

Andrews returns to the Talbot Athletic Ground having spent 12 years as an Aberavon player, while his playing career also included two seasons representing Wales 7s.

His appointment brings another coach into the environment with a deep understanding of the club, its identity and what representing Aberavon means.

Head Coach Chris Davies believes that connection, alongside Andrews’ approach to player development, makes him an important addition to the coaching group.

“Stef was someone I was really keen to bring into our environment. He understands Aberavon because he has lived it as a player, but more importantly, I think he has a huge amount to offer us as a coach.

We want our players to be confident, intelligent rugby players who can make decisions and solve problems under pressure. Stef’s approach fits really well with that, particularly around individual development, skills and helping players understand the game.

We have deliberately tried to build a coaching group with different strengths and perspectives. Stef adds something different to us and I’m really excited to see the impact he can have.”

Andrews’ rugby journey began with Tonmawr RFC at the age of eight, progressing through the age groups into senior rugby before making the move to Aberavon.

Now returning to the club in a different capacity, he admits the opportunity was an easy one to accept.

“Having been a player at Aberavon for so long, the club has always felt like a second family to me.

“When Chris approached me about coming in to coach, it was a pretty simple decision. I already knew the club, the people and the values. Having spent so many years there as a player, I felt I understood what makes Aberavon special and I was excited by the opportunity to give something back.”

A major part of Andrews’ role will be supporting the development of players within the performance environment and encouraging them to become confident decision-makers on the field.

It is an approach influenced by his own experiences as a young player, particularly the impact former coach Austen Howells had on his career.

“The confidence Austen showed in me as a young player had a huge impact on my development. He trusted me, gave me responsibility and allowed me to grow in confidence.

“That has had a big influence on the way I want to coach. I understand how important it is for a young player to have someone believe in them, give them an opportunity and create an environment where they feel confident enough to express themselves.”

That philosophy aligns closely with the direction Davies and his coaching team are developing at Aberavon.

Andrews wants the Wizards to play with ambition and freedom while retaining the work ethic and physicality traditionally associated with the club.

“I want Aberavon supporters to see a team that plays with energy, ambition and confidence.

“We want to be brave with the ball, play with tempo and intent and create opportunities rather than simply waiting for them. Alongside that, there has to be a strong work ethic, physicality and togetherness, especially when we don’t have the ball.

“Most importantly, I want the supporters to see a team they can be proud of — one that plays for each other, works hard for the badge and gives everything every time they step onto the field.”

The appointment carries additional significance as Aberavon prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary season.

For Andrews, returning during such an important year provides an opportunity both to recognise the club’s history and help shape what comes next.

“The 150th anniversary is a great opportunity to celebrate everything that has come before us, but I also think it’s about looking forward and creating the next chapter.

“The club’s history and traditions should give the players a real sense of pride in wearing the Aberavon jersey, while our focus has to be on building a strong future.

“Hopefully, we can respect what has been achieved over 150 years while creating new memories and giving the next generation something to be proud of.”
